Five tips for overnighting without unhooking your travel trailer from your truck

Is it safe to sleep in your travel trailer or fifth wheel while it’s still hooked to your truck? Can you damage the truck or trailer?

On a long road trip, sometimes we like to stop for a short rest. It’s not always affordable or practical to book a campsite, so we “moochdock” in areas that allow it. On nights like this, when we are only staying a short time to get some sleep, it seems like a lot of unnecessary effort to unhook the travel trailer from the truck.

We have videos with hitching and unhitching tips that you can find below.

You can leave your travel trailer hitched to your truck if you are stopping for an overnight stay and don’t want to go through the unhitching process. Here are a few tips:

  1. You want to be level. For comfort as well as running the refrigerator. If you are parked on an unloved surface, you may need to unhitch to get level.

  2. You can put the tongue jack down and allow a teensy lift to take weight off the bumper.

  3. It’s ok to use stabilizer jacks to decrease the wobble.

  4. Unplug the 7-pin. Some trucks charge the battery through that plug and you don’t want to kill your truck battery.

  5. Be very careful when getting ready to leave in the morning. Since you don’t have to go through all the hitching steps, it’s very important to remember to do the steps you do need to complete.
