The Minis take Michigan - 2023 Michigan Road Trip Day Seven: The Upper Peninsula

August 25

Today was another moving day, and the day we would cross the bridge into the Upper Peninsula - known of course as The UP.

It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity

That old saying had been on my mind a lot the last few days. Yes, it’s been warm and very humid. It’s also been drizzly on and off the past several days. So, camping on a sandy surface meant the there was snd everywhere! We left so many pairs of shoes by the door trying to contain the sand, but it didn’t help much.

The gloomy weather had put a little bit of a damper on our moods as well. We have been following the plan to see the sights, but have also been kind of feeling exhausted and unmotivated.

This morning we packed up, and I swept for about an hour trying to get all the sand out of the camper while Tony did the outside jobs. We took the Lippert Picnic Popup Gazebo down. Bill was kind enough to allow us to store it in the bed of his truck until we can get it dried out and into the bag. I dragged the Air Gear sand-free mat out to the paved road and tried to leave some of the wet sand behind.

Here comes the sun!

As we drove north, we started to see the sun shining! We had to figure out where we had stashed our sunglasses, because we hadn’t needed them for a few days.

Lunch

We stopped for lunch at Jax Northside Food & Spirits on the north end of Charlevoix. Tony wasn’t hungry; Bill and I had yummy sandwiches. Bill had onion rings that looked pretty danged good too!

Entering the Upper Peninsula

At last we reached Mackinaw City. It’s still hard for me to remember that whether it’s spelled Mackinac or Mackinaw, both words are pronounced ending with the “w” sound.

The bridge was very impressive, and I took a lot of photos. Also, at the recommendation of some friends, I found an app so I could identify that the ship passing under us was the Herbert C Jackson (US) bound for Holland. Cool!

Setting up camp

Just a few miles of construction after the bridge, we entered our home for the next two nights: Lakeshore Park RV Campground. Out front, you can’t miss it, is a big carved wood moose wearing jeans and a red flannel shirt.
