Venturing into Ut-ahhhhhh
Utahhhhhhh - this place is really nice
We had a nice night at Clark’s RV Park in Battle Mountain Nevada, then made our way east across Nevada. For no real reason, I chose West Wendover Nevada on Interstate 80 for our next stop. We stayed at a KOA campground.
Wendover is the border town between Nevada and Utah. On the west side, West Wendover Nevada boasts numerous casinos. I know a lot of people who like to live in a state close to a border so they can drive to a casino, and still be home in time for dinner. It certainly is easy in Wendover! I imagine one could even walk across the boundary if desired. Perhaps not in the summer heat though.
When the campground called us in the early afternoon to ask what time we would arrive, we said that the GPS had us there at 3:00. She said, ‘well it is 3:00 now” and I said we would arrive in about an hour. I was sort of confused, because I knew we would still be in Nevada, which to my knowledge is in the Pacific time zone. I guess the campground, though, uses the Mountain zone. Apparently, our Apple products were also confused. I know we were really close to the state line, and therefore to the time zone boundary. Tony’s watch and phone reflected the Mountain zone in camp, and mine stayed with the Pacific zone.
I took some time to look at time zone maps, and I believe at the Nevada/Utah border, West Wendover is the only city in Nevada to observe the Mountain zone. How very strange!
We do have a little bit of history in Wendover. When we owned the bed and breakfast, two of our nieces decided to come live and work with us. My sister and my mom followed the girls from their home in Loveland, Colorado to Wendover, where we met them for the night. We stayed on the Utah side, I think because my mom was able to get a discount. The hotel was pretty crummy, but really all we did was spend a night and we all survived. My niece found a dirty sock under the bed right away, and made a comment about housekeeping. I told her to hold on to that attitude for her work at the B&B! And yes, she did.
Wendover is also the gateway to the Bonneville salt flats. We have driven through this area a few times, but not really explored the flats. I found this photo of my great-niece and I on one of those pass-through visits.
Tony had to remind me in the morning that my watch, and my body, were operating in the wrong time zone. When I thought it was only 9:30, he said we only had half an hour to get packed up and checked out. Finally convinced, I got a move on and we got ready and out just in time.
We didn’t stop much, but in Tooele we did stop for gas and lunch. The TA truck stop had a Taco Bell and a Burger King. We both chose Taco Bell, and stocked up on hot sauce packets while we were there. As much as I watch the maps, I still didn’t realize we would be going through Tooele, where my friends the Claytons live. I am sad that I didn’t even try to touch bases with them.
From the Salt Flats in the morning to the mountains in the afternoon, we made good time to our next stop: Roam Echo Island RV resort in Coalville Utah. We had been invited to stay at this resort, and since it was on our route we accepted. Tony wrote about our stay in a separate post, found here.
We had some idea of what to expect, as our friends Jason and Abby had hosted a meetup here a couple months ago and our friends Michael, Micki, Patrick, and Bryan had attended. They gave us an idea about the campground and also made recommendations about things we should do, see, and eat (and drink) while in town. We thank them for their guidance.
Tony will likely also tell you this: the park was fully packed over the weekend, and maybe 20% filled by noon on Sunday!
It took me a few days of short writing sessions to complete this, and we are on the road again today. So I better get this posted and start packing up!
