Forest River Sunseeker 2550 Class C - space galore

Honest daily RV review of the 2023 Forest River Sunseeker 2550DSLE

Today’s RV review is of the Forest River Sunseeker 2550DSLE Class C motorhome. I recently had a chance to look at one of these and I really liked what I saw. There are a few buts, though I think this rig could serve a lot of people with a floor plan that’s flexible and very usable.

Why I like it

The interior of the the Forest River Sunseeker 2550DSLE offers a very open and spacious feel with the road side offering both a couch and a dinette. On the camp side the kitchen offers a lot of counter space which extends almost the length of the main living area.

With these two main areas on either side of the interior there are cabinets along the entire length of the couch and dinette over on the road side.

On the camp side they took advantage of things by putting a lot of cabinets and drawers. If you’re looking for interior storage, this motorhome certainly offers a good deal of that. A lot of these cabinets and drawers also feature soft-close hinges which gives the rig a higher quality feel.

On the subject of drawers, there are also two very long drawers under the dinette and those, too, feature the soft close mechanism. But these drawers will also come in handy as they’re essentially the full width of the dinette seats.

Nice touches

Since we’re here looking at the dinette know that the mount for the table is a no knee knocker design so you can slide in without saying the things your mom told you not to.

Did anyone else’s mom out there make them eat hot sauce when they swore? Side benefit: I now like hot foods.

This rig features the new Graystone cooking appliance which has three burners on the top and a convection microwave underneath. I bet you’re going to see this in more and more rigs as it just makes sense.

This appliance comes from Lippert’s buying a company called Way which makes these and other things in the RV space. Lippert is really good at taking RV supply companies and improving their processes and quality and then finding an audience for those products.

Interestingly this features a 12 volt fridge and it’s nice to see this type of fridge in a motorized coach as opposed to the more traditional RV absorption gas-electric model. I’m really happy not to see a residential reefer in this coach.

One of the things I really liked was the interior lighting on this motorhome. There are LED strips under the cabinets on both sides of the camper along with puck lights in the ceiling. The LED strips have their own individual switches which is a bonus.

There is a rather large TV here and it’s a 12 volt model, so you don’t have to run an inverter to operate the TV. Further, there is quite a bit of storage behind the TV as well.

An army sleeps here

There is a lot of room for sleepy campers in this rig. Over the cab is a two-person bed that’s a true queen-sized space. It also has a 440 pound capacity which is pretty generous. At the head of the bed are two decent-sized cubbies which each have a USB charging port in them. Nice.

There is also a true queen-sized bed at the back of the RV in a small camp-side slide room. This is presumed to be the main sleeping area.

Interestingly, the mattress for this sort of piles on top of itself when you bring the slide room in so this would absolutely be a place where you’d want to have the RV Super Bag bed system in place.

The couch in here does jackknife down into a bed, but it’s a pretty small bed. The dinette is another place you can transform into a snore spot, also smaller than a queen-sized bed. These two spaces would be ideal if you have smaller children or grandchildren along for the getaway.

And that’s where this rig really shines. With all that sleeping space and seating space along with plentiful cabinets, drawers and hanging storage this really is a very open and flexible RV. It would be great for just a couple for a getaway coach, but also good for a family. In fact even a larger family may find this rig to be a good choice.

Things to know

One of the options on this rig is entitled “Arctic Package.” What would be your interpretation of that? In this case it means there are 12 volt tank heaters.

Many of us choose to keep our RVs from freezing by simply camping where the weather suits our clothes and moving to where it’s warmer. But I think the name “Arctic Package” makes would make some buyers assume this was a rig designed for extreme cold camping. It isn’t.

If they simply called it “cold weather camping” package I think I’d be happier with that name.

Also be aware that this has a Schwintek slide on the road-side slide room. These are just fine if you keep them maintained and only completely extend or retract them. But many campers will only extend them part-way and then bring them back in. This can mess up the timing of the mechanism.

It’s easy enough to reset if you know how. I would prefer a different sort of slide mechanism for a slide room this large but this isn’t bad, it’s just something to be aware of.

Another thing to be aware of are the laws regarding occupants in your state. This RV features seat belts in the couch in the slide with seating facing inward. In some states, riders of certain age or weight classifications are not permitted to ride sideways.

There are also two belted positions in the forward-facing bench of the dinette so that would be likely where those individuals would ride. Again, just something to know about the laws in places you might go.

What I would change

While travel trailers have really stepped up their battery and solar game, it seems that Class C and Class A motorhomes are still a few years behind the times. For example, this rig features that 12 volt fridge but the most solar that seems to be available is only 190 watts.

True, these rigs do have generators aboard in the form of an Onan 4000 and that will run everything there is on this camper. But I wonder if it would be nicer to just have more batteries available and more solar so that your time away doesn’t sound like you’re in a downtown construction zone with that generator rattling away.

But I am the first to admit I do not like generators only because the alternatives are now so good and are completely silent.

Final thoughts

With the wide open feel of this rig, plentiful interior storage and the overall feel of the build. There are a lot of features to like including the fact that it’s built on the Ford E450 chassis which means the monster 7.2 liter gasoline V8. I like this much more than either Ford’s own Transit chassis, which is powered by a twin turbocharged gasoline V6 that requires premium fuel. I also like it much better than the Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis which is powered by a diesel V6 that seems to only be able to be serviced by a very few dealerships.

Overall a nice package indeed.
